' { n9 }1 _" X8 ~7 q# V

The combined British and French forces re-captured the Taku forts at the mouth of the Pei-Ho river on 21st August and then advanced up-river, finally reaching Peking on 22nd Spetember 1860. With the allies arrival, the Emperor went into exile and the Summer Palace was burnt by the British. # q( F% d$ O4 u' p* T2 B* M

3 D6 n4 V, Y! @3 `' R! K7 ^1 b) k
